Hands on Education for Life Project

Aims

The project’s central aim is to provide a hands-on approach to health education, empowering individuals and communities to take responsibility for their own well-being. After research in West Africa in February 2000, Michele Claiborne, a medical herbalist, saw that the people in remote areas have very little or no knowledge of basic healthcare; they do not even know how to treat a minor wound, which can result in death. What is more concerning is that they have no idea of basic nutrition. People are dying of constipation and even though they have the natural resources to eradicate this problem, they lack the knowledge of how to use them.

The people need a grounded education in how to help themselves with the provisions that they already have available, such as their medicinal plants and healing foods. In promoting this method of healing through nature, the world may even benefit from untapped medicinal flora, from which many of our drugs ultimately derive.

H.E.L.P. in Action

The H.E.L.P. project promotes and teaches the traditional healers who, although they know many plants that can be used effectively, need training on how to properly diagnose. Most importantly education of basic hygiene, nutrition and environmental problems such as waste is a main focus in the open clinics held in remote communities. This knowledge is the key to preventing most ill health.

Simple planting programs are being established by distributing the seeds of nutritious yet easy to grow vegetables, grains, fruit bearing trees and herbs. We have also purchased four acres of land for a community planting project as an inspiring example, and hope to build a more permanent health school.

The West African staple diet is polished, broken white rice morning, noon and night. Where whole grains have been reintroduced by H.E.L.P., it has been a very effective beginning to eradicate the nutrition and constipation problem. Not only is there a need for this project, but also the people embrace it as they are wanting and willing to learn how to help themselves, though to continue this education project we need your help!

We need funds for: Wells • Distillers • Grain Seeds • Trees • Building Materials • Teaching Aids • Medical Equipment • Agricultural Equipment • Continuing Education Programs

We need to collect: Sunglasses • Old Prescription glasses • Vegetable Seeds • Bandages

Finances

The foundation needs to be sponsored by individuals schools, and companies. Although it is primarily targeted to help those in countries that have poor health and educational facilities, it will also give a vital message for children in this country. To raise funds with the schools, the foundation proposes to offer the schools interesting, entertaining, lively and educational lectures, including a documentary. The subject will be on the culture and music of Africa, explaining also the aims of the project; ‘to empower the individual and communities to take responsibility for their own health and well being’, undoubtedly an important education message for everyone.

The charity hopes that schools will see the importance of raising funds for this project and add it to their chosen charitable trusts they raise money for.

If you are an individual, we hope that you can see that the individual can make a difference. We hope you can donate some of the items we need, raise money for H.E.L.P. through fund raising, or simply contribute what you can.

If you are a company we hope that you can sponsor some part of our project or donate something your company makes and that the foundation is looking for.

"H.E.L.P them today"

“Africa is like the worlds open sore, infected with all kinds of bacteria and viruses, which, left to fester will spread, which it already has in the case of AIDS. We cannot leave this wound untended, it needs humanity to see the warning and recognize that it will not just go away. These problems will affect us all, even if we insist on trying to hide and isolate them; the problems will not go away. The only solution is to try and heal. In my open clinic I teach the people that you must clean and bandage every cut, however small, otherwise it will become infected and spread.

Africa is not an easy country to fall in love with, but it is like a very needy and sick child that desperately needs our love. It is a difficult and corrupt land requiring compassion, tolerance, perseverance, understanding and the ability to give unconditionally. We must see that individuals can make a difference, even if it is helping one other, so please find out how you can H.E.L.P.”
